Mental Health Awareness and Mitigation
Support for Eritrean and Ethiopian immigrants in Colorado
Eritrean and Ethiopian immigrants in Colorado silently struggle with mental health issues as limited resources, support, and education is offered.
This project addresses the alarming rates of mental health issues prevalent in the Eritrean and Ethiopian communities of Colorado. As expressed by the community, local efforts, and concerns from mental health institutions, the increasing rates of suicide, substance abuse, and violent outbreaks by Eritrean and Ethiopian diaspora and immigrants is quickly raising. Despite experiencing the highest levels of mental health issues, immigrant populations are less likely to access adequate support, revealing the issue’s severity.
Data Collection
Through interview and focus group results, this section explores Eritrean and Ethiopians’ understanding of mental health including general causes, signs/ triggers, how they address it, and what is needed moving forward.
